I KNEW A MAN who was a Christian, and proud of it. But he swore and cursed more than almost anyone else I’ve ever known, and he was particularly imaginative in finding ways to abuse the name of God. I reminded him of the third of the Ten Commandments: ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain’ (Exodus 20:7). He smiled and said, “It’s just the way I am. I live hard and talk hard.
