26th February 2025. The day the British people awoke to the news that the Government has slashed its overseas aid budget and diverted the money into armaments, and that the British energy giant BP is drastically scaling down its renewables programme in favour of more oil and gas drilling. And these green and pleasant isles reverberated gently to the sound of all those people who still cling to their faith that humanity can sort out its problems, banging their heads against walls.
At times like this it’s good to remind ourselves that it’s going to be OK. ‘Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation’ (Psalm 146:3).
Humanity is not going to sort its problems out. But the return of Jesus Christ is near. For those who trust God’s promises and act upon them, the future is clear and bright:
Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! (Psalm 72:1-3).
